Their Pearl Valley Swiss cheese (Holmes County, i.e., Amish Country) is one of the most popular items - they sell up to 2,000 pounds of it every week! My husband and I have helped keep that number growing! They also sell Guggisberg Baby Swiss and Guggisberg Butter Cheese (this is a great cheese you must try it). Shisler's sells cheese, of course, and most of it is locally produced. Should I say this mouse "pines" for cheese? "More than 30,000 cars and trucks go by on Route 30 every day," Rita said, "and after they've come here once, they usually stop by every time."Īs you drive into the spacious parking lot, you'll be greeted by an adorable 11-foot-high mouse sitting on a stack of Swiss cheese! "He" used to be one of two very large pine trees planted by Fred Biery "way back when." Well, one tree died and the other wasn't doing too well, so Rita came up with the idea of having a local artisan carve it into the 11-foot cheese lover. Located on the edge of Amish Country (and conveniently right between Simply Smucker's and Lehman's Hardware), Shisler's draws customers from the area, but most are travelers and tourists. It's been in the family ever since, and Rita Shisler has been involved in this wonderful cheese house for the past 36 years. In 1952, Old Lincoln Way gave way to the new US 30, Biery moved his business to the present location and a few years later sold it to the Shisler family. It began around the corner back in the 1940s as Biery Cheese, founded by Fred Biery who had come from Switzerland (you know, where they've made cheese nearly forever). Shisler's Cheese House is no new establishment. well, with the exception of Limburger, you name it, we'll eat it! Four years ago, we discovered Shisler's Cheese House, and we've been as happy as mice ever since! Swiss cheese, Cheddar cheese (the sharper, the better), Longhorn cheese, Hot Pepper cheese.
